The 2016 FCEM softball season kicks off Thursday, August 18th at Blue Hill. The team is coming off a 9-21 record from a season ago, while finishing 2nd place in the SNC tournament year.
The team returns only one Senior in Marissa Nun. Nun was an Honorable Mention All-SNC player from a year ago. Seven returning starters return, led by a strong Junior class including: Two-year All-Conference & All-State candidates Alexis Schmidt, Sydney Schelkopf, and Kelsey Bigelow.
Head Coach Aaron Lauby discussed this year’s team. “We hope to see the hard work the players have put in the past two seasons pay off this year. We only have one Senior on the team with seven returning starters. Our Junior class is our core, and with a talented and determined group we look forward to starting the season. We will need to be improved on the mound, and continue to get better defensively. We have some holes that might take some time to sort out, but I like the candidates we have for those positions. Consistency in our production throughout our lineup will also be key. Juniors Sydney Schelkopf and Alexis Schmidt both put up big statistics last season and will be counted on to anchor our lineup. I expect big contributions from Juniors Kelsey Bigelow, Alexis Uldrich and Hannah Horne. Newcomer Janey Erdkamp, and returners Alia Hurst, Jayda Gaston, Sydney Simacek, Tori Stoldorf, Kalisha Gergen and Maggie Maffin will push for playing time, and be a great core group getting seasoned at the Junior Varsity level. Sophomore Josie Kresak is our only returning starting outfielder so there should be some good competition for opportunities there. Senior Marissa Nun gives us quality experience from the circle with Junior Kaitlyn Vavra and Freshman Jacy Schlueter getting acclimated to high school softball pitching.“
District opponents this year include Central City, Twin River, Centennial, Blue Hill, Friend, and St. Paul. “We will have a tough SNC Conference and District tournament. That never changes, but I like how good we can be. If we improve every game, and every week we should give ourselves an opportunity to be there at the end to compete.”
