Throughout the year, Fillmore Central first grade students have had hands-on lessons about many agriculture products that are produced here in Nebraska. In December, youth learned about bees by extracting honey from the 4-H hive. In January, the focus was dairy and dairy products where students made butter. In February and March students learned about poultry and pigs/pork through incubating eggs and enjoying green eggs and ham on Dr. Seuss’s birthday. In April, students learned about the different plant parts we eat through potatoes and popcorn. Finally, the year of learning culminated by enjoying a delicious picnic on May 3rd. Thanks to Fillmore Central Public Schools, a Nebraska Farm Bureau Taste and Teach grant, Nebraska Extension-Fillmore County, Jill’s Sweet Shop, and Fillmore Central Beef Boosters students enjoyed hamburgers, chips, honey pizzelles, and milk highlighting most of the Nebraska agriculture products they have learned about throughout the year.
